I was wondering what people thought about games like this, and let everyone know about some nifty ones I found while looking for stuff for the Linux distro I am getting. :) If anyone has any other good ones that are semi-obsecure, post the links here.
These aren't the standard puzzle/card games that tend to make up a good portion of freeware games. Nothing wrong with them, its just that there's so many.. o.o
Vega Strike - A 3D space sim with VERY high quality graphics (a lot like the Elite/Frontier series)
vegastrike.sourceforge.net
Cube - A first-person shooter with a great engine of its own

Ur-Quan Masters - Star Control 2 (3DO version) ported to the modern PC
sc2.sourceforge.net/
FreeCiv - A Civilization II clone

Battle for Wesnoth - A fantasy real-time strategy game

Legends - Tribes-style multiplayer

Phobia 3 - Fast-paced action game

This has been around for a long time -- it was originally supposed to be an Ultima Online clone -- but they have yet to produce any games. However, their focus seems to be more on making modular tools that can be used to make a game (or an engine for a game) rather than on making a game themselves.
crystal.sourceforge.net
This is an opengl based engine. There's a bunch of links to games that use it on the site, but the most interesting one is probably www.planeshift.it/ -
